General Manager Bob Gebhard of the Colorado Rockies resigned Friday as the team struggled through the final weeks of its second consecutive losing season.

Team owner Jerry McMorris announced Gebhard’s resignation in Denver while the Rockies played the Chicago Cubs at Chicago.

“It was Geb’s decision,” McMorris said.

He fended off questions about recent reports that he planned to fire Gebhard at the end of the season, saying, “That would be pure speculation.”

McMorris said Gebhard didn’t tell him whether speculation about his job contributed to his decision to resign, but added it could have been a factor.

“Rumors have been more intensive as time has gone by and it’s clearly taken its toll on Geb,” McMorris said. “It was difficult for everybody here. There are a lot of red eyes in the organization today. He’s our friend.”

Gebhard did not attend the news conference and wasn’t available for comment.

Gebhard’s responsibilities are being taken over by Pat Daugherty, vice president for scouting; Gary Hughes, vice president for player personnel; and Tony Siegal, director for baseball administration.

McMorris said Hughes is a candidate to become general manager.
