Spiker, Jakosky Named Ventura’s Best

Senior Josh Spiker of Ventura High and junior Laura Jakosky of Agoura were selected as the Ventura County cross-country runners of the year by a vote of coaches.

Spiker won six of seven races by an average of 47 seconds, including a course-record effort in the county championships at Lake Casitas on Oct. 29. He missed the last four meets because of a stress fracture in his lower right leg.

Jakosky won the county title by 14 seconds, placed second in the Southern Section Division II final and was sixth in the state meet.

Kevin Smith of Oak Park was the boys’ coach of the year and Ken Reeves of Nordhoff was the girls’.

Smith guided Oak Park to its first county title and Reeves led Nordhoff to its third championship in five years.

BASKETBALL

Ruben Douglas, former Bell-Jeff High player who is transferring from Arizona, is considering New Mexico, Oklahoma, Villanova and Georgia.

Douglas, The Times’ 1998 Valley player of the year, in 1998, started 14 games as a freshman guard for Arizona.

GOLF

* Mitch Voges of Simi Valley shot 73-72--145 and made the cut in the PGA Senior Tour Qualifying School at Tucson, Ariz. The 63 players who made the cut will play two more rounds, with eight exempt PGA Tour cards and eight partial exemptions at stake.

BASEBALL

* Andy Lopez of Glendale College has committed to Pepperdine.
