Note of Finality for Crescenta Valley

James Jenkins, a 6-foot-6 center, had 23 points and 14 rebounds helping Crescenta Valley High advance to the championship game of the Hoover-Burbank tournament with a 70-63 victory over Burbank on Thursday night at Burbank High.

Crescenta Valley (2-0) received strong performances from its young guards, sophomore Chris Tarne (19 points) and freshman Jimmy Goffredo (13 points).

Frank Reed scored 24 points, including four three-point baskets, and Damien Jordan had 15 points for Burbank (1-1).

Morningside 86, Valencia 74--Royce Minor scored 24 points and Will Broadous had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists but the Vikings lost in the Pacific Shore tournament.

In Saugus tournament games:

Oxnard 96, Van Nuys 36--Matthew Merricks had 18 points and five steals, and Erik Webb scored 17 points for the Yellowjackets (2-0) in the quarterfinals.

Saugus 73, Verdugo Hills 57--Mike Grisanti scored 16 points and had nine rebounds and Tim Tampus also had 16 points for Saugus (2-0) in a quarterfinal victory.

Tampus scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Michael Elliot had 20 points and Kevin Baird had 15 for Verdugo Hills.

Alemany 70, Bakersfield Stockdale 66--Reny Maynard scored seven of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and the Indians rallied to win a quarterfinal game.

Byron Joseph scored 23 points for Alemany (3-0), which trailed after three quarters, 51-47.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 77, Golden West 58--The Monarchs won their fifth consecutive behind Felix Lang’s 19 points and Isaac Williamson’s 13 in the first round of the Orange Coast tournament.

Valley (6-3) scored the first seven points en route to a 17-6 lead and Golden West got no closer than 37-27 with 10:05 to play.

Glendale 79, Cuesta 65--The Vaqueros made 22 of 40 shots in the first half to take a 47-22 lead en route to a first-round victory in the Bakersfield tournament.

Matt Moore scored 15 points for Glendale (5-2).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Kennedy 71, Sherman Oaks CES 29--Jevay Grooms had 21 points, 23 rebounds and six steals for the Golden Cougars (1-1) in a victory at Sherman Oaks CES.

Notre Dame 72, Immaculate Heart 47--Sierra Hauser-Price had 29 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Knights in a victory at Notre Dame.

Nikki Inaromna had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals for Notre Dame (2-0).

Highland 62, Victory Valley 22--Shi Stowers had 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had 10 steals for the Bulldogs (2-1) in a second-round victory at the Rio Grande tournament.

In Crescenta Valley tournament games:

North Hollywood 50, Littlerock 41--Kaipresha Price 20 points and Richelle Sherman had 15 points and 16 rebounds helping the Huskies (2-0) down the Lobos.

Grant 56, La Canada 43--Alexis Weatherspoon had 25 points, 12 rebounds and four steals for the victorious Lancers.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 2, Valencia 2--Mike Brewer and Ryan Shaw scored on assists by Andy Burghdorf for St. Francis in the Burroughs tournament. Wes Ervin and Ben Ett scored for Valencia (1-0-1).

Hart 2, Littlerock 1--Oscar Mendez and Jose Ochoa scored for the Indians at Hart.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Valencia 6, Lancaster 0--Jaisa Creps, Shari Summers and Melanie Ervin each scored two goals for the Vikings (1-1) at Valencia.
