County Computers Ready for Y2K, Official Says
The county administration is ready for the millennium.
That’s what the $15-billion government’s top computer official, Chief Information Officer Jon Fullinwider, has reported to the Board of Supervisors. And he was backed up by a commendation from the White House naming Los Angeles the county best prepared for 2000.
“We are in absolutely very good shape,” Fullinwider said during a county supervisors meeting earlier this week. “We are Y2K OK.”
The year 2000 problem refers to a computer glitch caused by older computers programmed to recognize only the final two digits of a year, which would lead them to treat the new century as 1900. Fullinwider said that of the county’s 987 computer systems, 986 have had the problem erased and the final one in the coroner’s office will be completely debugged next week.
Fullinwider said the main concern is assuring that residents do not panic and misinterpret normal power outages as caused by a Y2K bug.
