SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A police officer hit by a suspected drunk driver while conducting a traffic stop Friday on Pacific Coast Highway was released from the hospital the next day with a broken arm, hospital officials said.

Co-workers of Richard Wright, a 51-year-old Huntington Beach motorcycle officer, said he was recuperating at home Sunday.

Shortly before midnight Friday, Wright was talking to a teenage driver of a pickup he had just stopped north of Seapoint Avenue in Huntington Beach. Both were standing on the side of the road.

Wright’s motorcycle was hit by Ronald B. Grey, 37, who was driving a Jeep Cherokee south on Pacific Coast Highway. The motorcycle hit Wright and the 16-year-old boy he had stopped. The Jeep then crashed into the boy’s truck, in which another teenager was sitting.

The teen driver, his passenger and Wright were all treated and released from UCI Medical Center. Grey was treated for minor injuries at Huntington Beach Hospital and arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
