The city is requesting formal assurance from the Marines Corps that its proposed helicopter training facility will not be used for additional aircraft or more heavily than originally indicated.

The City Council drafted a letter at Wednesday’s regular meeting asking Camp Pendleton officials to formally limit the number of operations that will be held at the new facility. The Marine Corps is planning two parallel, 4,000-foot airstrips that officials said would be used for 430 daily training operations about 3 1/2 miles from San Clemente city limits.

Although an environmental assessment on the Helicopter Outlying Landing Field estimates that the facility will house a maximum of 430 takeoffs and landings every day, the city is concerned that number will increase in the future.
