University’s Lawrence Scores 20 in Victory

Andy Lawrence scored 20 points to help University to a 12-point halftime lead it never relinquished and the Trojans defeat Irvine, 77-74, in one Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament semifinal Friday at University High.

Ryan Zinchefsky added 14 points for University, which advanced to the finals to play La Puente Nogales at 6 tonight at Concordia.

Andrew Bosshart scored 21 points and Matt Roggero added 20 for Irvine (3-6).

In the other Irvine World News semifinal:

La Puente Nogales 71, Estancia 65--Estancia (5-3) was leading 65-63 with 1 minute 50 seconds remaining when Nogales (7-3) scored eights consecutive points.

John Cantrell scored a game-high 29 points for Estancia.

In the Troy tournament:

No. 2 Troy 75, Cerritos Valley Christian 32--Nate Gilkes had 10 points and six blocks and Mark Alhberg had 11 rebounds for Troy (9-0), which held Valley Christian to two points in the second quarter. The Warriors play Valencia at 7:30 tonight in the final at Troy.

Valencia 60, Sunny Hills 50--Emmanuel Ortega made four three-pointers in the opening quarter and scored 15 of his 18 points for Valencia (4-5). Eric Hardeman scored 24 points for Sunny Hills (4-5).

In the Arroyo Grande boys’ basketball tournament:

No. 4 Ocean View 74, Templeton 60--Jeremiah Bell had 22 points and 10 rebounds to help Ocean View (8-1) to a 13-point lead after outscoring Templeton, 22-8, in the third quarter. Ocean View advanced to play Camarillo in today’s final.

Marques Crane scored 21 points and Ryan Westbrook had 14 points and nine assists for Ocean View.

In the Murrieta Valley tournament:

Ontario 70, No. 5 Marina 61--Dustin Kaatz had 28 points and 12 rebounds for Marina (5-2) in the pool-play loss.

In the Avalon tournament:

Anaheim 68, South Pasadena 55--Stephen Miller scored 19 points, Robert Mendoza had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Jesus Salcedo scored 14 for Anaheim in the semifinals. Anaheim (7-3) advanced to play Heritage Christian at 1:30 today in the final.

Heritage Christian 99, Avalon 54--Todd Warner had 26 points, including eight three-pointers, and Matt Winter had 23 points to lead Heritage Christian (5-3). Avalon is 4-1.

In the Orlando, (Fla.) Lake Highland tournament semifinals:

Edison 36, Orlando First Academy 34--Steve Henderson had 10 rebounds and nine points for Edison (4-3), which advanced to today’s final at 5 p.m. against tournament host Lake Highland.

In the Sonora tournament:

Corona del Mar 63, Downey Warren 58--Kevin Hansen scored nine of his 30 points in the fourth quarter as Corona del Mar outscored Warren in the quarter, 25-10, in the semifinals. Alec Hanson had 20 points for the Sea Kings (7-2). Corona del Mar will play Los Angeles Fremont in the final.

In the Trabuco Hills tournament:

No. 6 Santa Margarita 68, Bakersfield Stockdale 29--Ryan Stacy scored 17 points and Lenny Collins had 12 for Santa Margarita in the pool-play game.

Costa Mesa 73, Fontana Miller 47--Nathan Jones scored 16 of his 26 points in the first half and Ryan Naff added 14 points for Costa Mesa in a pool-play game.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Buena Park 59, La Quinta 56--Matt Rodriguez scored with 20 seconds remaining to give host Buena Park (7-3) a one-point lead and Zach Barker’s layup eight seconds later secured the victory. Andre Gipson led Buena Park with 16 points.

Matt Blanchard scored 20 points for La Quinta (3-6).

El Dorado 72, Aliso Niguel 58--Kyle Miller scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter when the Golden Hawks (9-1) went on a 10-0 run and broke open a 48-48 tie. Quinn Hawking scored 19 points for El Dorado.

Ryann Ross led Aliso Niguel (6-4) with 18 points.

Rancho Alamitos 62, Westminster 59--Cuby Vantich had 19 points and seven assists for host Rancho Alamitos (5-4). Keishun Hollins scored 21 points for Westminster.

Servite 92, Loara 74--Roger Hogan scored all of his 19 points in the first half when visiting Servite moved ahead, 53-29. Martin Iti had 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Friars. Wes Wardrop scored 27 points for Loara (4-6).
