Brandon Armstrong had 15 points and seven rebounds Monday as Pepperdine defeated Detroit Mercy, 73-51, in the opening round of the San Juan Shootout at the Mario Morales Coliseum in Puerto Rico.
The Waves (7-2) held Detroit’s Rashad Phillips, the nation’s third-leading scorer with a 26.4 average, to two points and outrebounded the Titans, 48-35.
Phillips, the leading scorer for the Titans (5-3) in every other game this season, made one of seven shots and had seven turnovers.
Pepperdine took control early, assuming a 20-9 lead on a basket by Armstrong with 8:10 remaining in the first half. Detroit closed within 24-21 at halftime, but that was as close it got.
Tommie Prince had 13 points for Pepperdine, and David Lalazarian had 12 by making all four of his three-point shots.
Terrell Riggs led Detroit Titans with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Waves will play Louisiana Lafayette, which defeated Miami, 66-60, in Tuesday’s semifinals.
