Free Cervical Cancer Screenings Available

Share

Three area clinics will offer low-income women free cervical cancer screenings in January.

The program, called “Cervical Cancer Best Practices,” aims to help increase awareness that cervical cancer is preventable through Pap smears, which can detect abnormal lesions before they become cancerous.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the occurrence of cervical cancer among the county’s Latinas, African Americans and Koreans is significantly higher than the national average of 7.4 per 100,000 women.

Among L.A. County Latinas alone, the rate is 19.5 per 100,000 women, nearly three times the national average.
