U.S. Team Claims Junior Racquetball Titles

The United States took first place in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions and won the overall team title at the Pro Kennex 11th International Racquetball Federation’s World Junior Championships at the Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley on Wednesday.

Mexico finished second and Canada took third in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

Josh Tucker of Joplin, Mo., defeated Shane Vanderson of Dublin, Ohio, in the boys’ 18-and-under singles final, 15-13, 11-15, 11-7. Vanderson teamed with Stephen Lewis of Kennewick, Wash., to win the doubles title, 11-15, 15-11, 11-10, over Matt Gehling of Annapolis, Md., and Michael Harmon of Sarasota, Fla.

Brooke Crawford of Klamath Falls, Ore., won the girls’ 18-and-under division with a 15-12, 15-8 victory over Sara Borland of Bettendorf, Iowa. Crawford and Borland teamed to win the doubles title over Canada’s Genevieve Brodeur and Veronique Guillemette, 10-15, 15-13, 11-3.

WATER POLO

Omar Amr, a former All-American at UC Irvine, has been named the Anteaters’ assistant women’s coach. Amr, who played at UCI from 1993 to 1997 and is a member of U.S. National team, will assist head coach Julie Swail.
