* Eric Holtfreter, the career passing leader at Valley College, signed with California on Wednesday.

“Cal is in the Pac-10 [Conference] and the education, you can’t beat it,” Holtfreter said.

Holtfreter, from Quartz Hill High, had 4,376 yards passing and 34 touchdowns the last two seasons.

Valley Coach Carl Ferrill said Holtfreter is the first Monarch quarterback to sign with a Pac-10 school.

TRACK AND FIELD

* A series of three all-comers meets will be held at Cal State Northridge in January and February.

The meets are Jan. 15 and 22, and Feb. 5. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and the running events at 11.
