Sunny Hills Wins on Late Free Throws

Kim Mackeand made two free throws in the final minute of overtime to lift Sunny Hills to a 46-44 victory over Magnolia in Garden Grove girls’ basketball tournament pool-play game Monday.

Kristen Fong and Jasmine Raphael each scored 10 points for the Lancers (5-7).

In another tournament game:

Kennedy 64, Saddleback 55 (OT)--Lauren Shinto scored 16 points for Kennedy (8-4) and teammate Nicole Doi added 12. Denise De La Rosa was the game’s high scorer with 26 points for Saddleback (6-4). De La Rosa also led in rebounds with 14 and was 12 of 14 from the field. In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Costa Mesa 74, Cerritos Whitney 47--Autumn Smith had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Nancy Hatsushi had 13 points and 12 assists for Costa Mesa (7-4) in the first-round game.

Fountain Valley 58, Tustin 31--Lauren Ochizono had 20 points, including four three-pointers, and five steals to lead Fountain Valley (6-6) to a first-round victory. Jessica Estrada scored 13 points for the Barons, who went on a 21-4 run to start the game.

In the Laguna Beach tournament:

Capistrano Valley Christian 54, Laguna Beach 16--Bethany Thom scored 20 points and made seven steals for Capistrano Valley Christian (6-2). Crystal Hickey and Sarah Wild each made 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

Orange Lutheran 67, Downey Calvary Chapel 40--Senior forward Nicole Grady scored 20 points and freshman guard Ashley Amaral added 14 for the Lancers (5-4).

Santa Ana Valley 53, Long Beach St. Anthony 48--Monique Cruz scored all of her 15 points in the second half for Santa Ana Valley. Cruz, along with Crystal Davis, also had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons, who play Santa Ana in the second round today at 5 p.m.

In the Marina tournament:

Capistrano Valley 59, Lawndale Leuzinger 50--Lindsey Peloza scored 18 points for Capistrano Valley in the first round. Freshman Jessica Voisard led the Cougars (7-3) with 13 rebounds and fellow freshman Hallie Steube added ten.

Castro Valley 58, Marina 56--Nikki Lee (25 points) had a seven-foot jumper to tie the score with two seconds left lip the rim and fall out for Marina.

Huntington Beach 54, Dana Hills 30--Amy Sanders had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Christine Kimoto had 11 assists for Huntington Beach (6-3) in the first round.

Santa Margarita 50, Reno (Nev.) 36--Venessa Ferragamo had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles (7-3). Colleen O’Leary, who had 13 points, went six for six from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

In the Orangewood Academy tournament:

Whittier Christian 39, Liberty Christian 30--Allison Holland scored 16 points to lead Whittier Christian (6-5) to a first-round victory. Crissy Davis scored 10 to lead Liberty Christian. The Minutemen went on an 11-4 run in the second quarter to take a seven-point lead at halftime, but Whittier Christian answered with a 15-5 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

Whittier Christian plays Orangewood Academy in the second round today. Liberty Christian plays Bethel Christian.

In the Palm Desert tournament

Century 51, Calexico 25--Charlinda Van Buren scored 16 points for Century (9-3), including 10 points in the first half.

In the Santiago tournament:

Corona del Mar 49, Canyon 46--Kristen McCoy scored 22 points and Charlene Quon had 15 for Corona del Mar in the pool-play game.

In the Savanna tournament:

Cypress 56, Aliso Niguel 53 (OT)--Remy Hotomi made two free throws with 50 seconds left on the clocks and teammate Jessica Maua scored added another free throw 22 seconds later to give Cypress (6-5) the victory. Kristy Schmitz led Cypress with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Nikia Hastie scored 18 points for Aliso Niguel (5-5).

Savanna 40, La Quinta 28--Reanita Starr scored 21 points and had six steals for Savanna (6-4).
