Time for Beaver Fans to Look at Scoreboard

Dwight Jaynes of the Portland Oregonian is obviously bitter about Oregon State’s 23-17 loss to Hawaii in Saturday’s Oahu Bowl game in Honolulu:

“From now on, the Pacific 10 Conference--whose Arizona State was lambasted in the opening game of this bowl doubleheader--ought to consider declining all bowl invitations. Just say no.

“Of all the teams invited to postseason play from the Pac-10, the Beavers seemed the best bet for a win. They were favored by almost double figures and were, quite frankly, bigger, faster and stronger than the Rainbows.”

But not better, Dwight.

Trivia time: Who holds the Rose Bowl record for most touchdown passes?

It won’t happen: Linda Robertson in the Miami Herald on some resolutions she’d like to see:

* “I will admit I bet on baseball and say I’m sorry I impugned the integrity of the game.”--Pete Rose.

* “I will grow up.”--Ryan Leaf.

* “I will do something more meaningful with my time than sell perfume, play golf and invest in online sporting goods ventures.”--Michael Jordan.

Ready to explode: Ron Rapoport in the Chicago Sun-Times: “Junior Seau’s eight-year Pro Bowl run is over, and he’s not taking it at all well.

‘They started a war,’ the Charger linebacker said. ‘I look forward to the next millennium because there are going to be fireworks.’ ”

Shaping up: A treadmill 10 feet long and eight feet wide is being installed in Salt Lake City to help U.S. skaters and skiers prepare for the 2002 Winter Games.

It has a top speed of 30 mph and a maximum grade of 30%, about twice the speed and incline of health-club treadmills.

Comic relief: Mike Lupica in the New York Daily News: “It’s always heartwarming when a coaching lightweight like Jerry Glanville informs his viewers that 1/8Giant Coach 3/8 Jim Fassel doesn’t merit a contract extension quite yet.

“Somebody tell Glanville that he’s on the CBS pregame show to wear a clown suit, and that Jim Nantz and the rest of the guys will handle the serious football stuff.”

No argument: Jayson Stark of the Philadelphia Inquirer says the greatest sports quote of the century is Yogi Berra’s “It’s deja vu all over again.” No. 2 is from pitcher Larry Andersen: “Why does everybody stand up and sing ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ when they’re already there?”

FYI: Sports historian Dwain Esper recalls that in 1932, UCLA quarterback Mike Frankovich teamed with Ransom “Pants” Livesay on a 93-yard touchdown pass play on the last play of the game to lead the Bruins over Oregon, 12-7. The defensive back trying to cover Livesay was Bill Bowerman, shoe pioneer and former Oregon track coach who died Friday.

Trivia answer: USC’s Pete Beathard against Wisconsin in 1963, and UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel against Illinois in 1984, four.

And finally: Jack Nicklaus on Tiger Woods: “I think Tiger plays the game for titles, and I don’t think money will affect him.

“Even at 23, I don’t think he can spend what he’s made.”
