Cal State Northridge 7, Southern Utah 6--The Matadors scored two runs in the ninth to win at Northridge.

Kevin Patrick and Eric Horvat doubled to tie the score and the Thunderbirds tried to pitch around Danny Phillips, who had homered twice. However, the second pitch got past catcher Shane Huegly and pinch-runner Matt Synhorst scored from second.

The homers were the fourth and fifth of the season for Phillips, who drove in three runs to give him 18 in eight games.

Jim DeBiase pitched seven shutout innings for Northridge (5-3) but experienced pain in his arm while warming up for the eighth. Jose Vasquez gave up a grand slam to Tyler Peterson in the eighth, when Southern Utah (2-5) took a 5-3 lead.

Northridge tied the score in the eighth and Southern Utah took a 6-5 lead with a run in the ninth against Andrew Sanchez (1-0), who put out the fire in the eighth.

The Master’s 17, Simpson 0--Matt Berry and Mark Steenback combined on a seven-inning no-hitter and Aaron Penberthy collected seven runs batted in for the Mustangs (4-2) in a nonconference game called because of darkness at Master’s.

Penberthy doubled twice and hit a home run for The Master’s, which had 17 hits.

Berry (1-1) struck out 10 and walked two in five innings. Steenback went the last two innings with one strikeout and one walk.

Harbor 8, Valley 4--Sigi Arroyo had three hits and drove in a run, and Ed Jung hit a solo home run but the Monarchs lost in the South Coast tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Bakersfield 103, Pierce 71--Cheryl Flores had 19 points but the Brahmas (9-15, 3-5) lost a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Bakersfield.

Nicole Woodruff had 24 points for Bakersfield (15-10, 4-3).
