Sorry, Guys, Your Horse Has to Weight It Out

Share

Bob Baffert and Bob Lewis [Jan. 31] are ungracious winners and sore losers.

I have been going to the races for more than 50 years and the weighting of horses is essential to maintain the integrity of the sport. To compare it to football or other sports is ludicrous.

In racing there is mutuel betting and the fans have to know that all the horses are supposed to have an equal chance. The theory behind the weighting of the field is to produce a dead heat.

But Swaps, Kelso, Secretariat and Citation won their races carrying 130 pounds and more. They did that over a distance of ground, sometimes establishing a track or world record and spotting weight to the competition.

If Silver Charm is to be considered for horse of the year in 1999, he should be able to do some of the above despite his owner and trainer.
