Penguins Streaking, Even in Overtimes
Jaromir Jagr scored twice and the Penguins rallied to beat the Vancouver Canucks, 6-5, at Pittsburgh for their eighth consecutive victory and second overtime win in three nights.
Jagr scored his first goal and assisted on another in the opening 2:10 of the third period after Pittsburgh twice fell behind by two goals, then won it 1:21 into overtime with his 26th goal.
Jagr’s three-point night--he also assisted on Kip Miller’s tying goal in the third period--gave him 21 of his league-high 80 points during Pittsburgh’s longest winning streak since an eight-game run in late 1995.
Florida 3, Ottawa 1--Viktor Kozlov had a goal and an assist to lead the struggling Panthers past the Senators at Kanata, Canada.
Winning for the first time in four games, Florida moved into a tie with idle Boston for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
The Senators lost for only the third in 21 games.
San Jose 5, St. Louis 1--Rookie Alexander Korolyuk followed a career-best, three-assist game with two goals as the Sharks rolled at St. Louis.
Steve Shields stopped 29 shots as the Sharks won their third in a row by a combined 13-3 after dropping the first two games of a 10-game trip--the longest uninterrupted trip in NHL history.
Detroit 4, Edmonton 2--Sergei Fedorov had a goal and an assist and Chris Osgood stopped 29 shots in the Red Wings’ victory at Detroit and extended the Oilers’ season-worst three-game losing streak at the start of a five-game road trip.
Buffalo 5, Montreal 2--Randy Cunneyworth, Paul Kruse and Mike Wilson scored their first goals of the season in a victory at Buffalo, N.Y.
