Cincinnati Loses Cool, Third Consecutive Game

Virgel Cobbin scored 20 points as Saint Louis handed No. 4 Cincinnati its third consecutive loss, 69-57, Sunday at St. Louis.

Ryan Luechtefeld had 18 points for Saint Louis, 14-12 overall and 8-5 Conference USA, which ended a 10-game losing streak against Cincinnati.

Saint Louis broke open a close game with free-throw shooting down the stretch, making 15 of 16 attempts in the second half while Cincinnati (21-4, 8-4) was one for two in the half. Cincinnati helped by losing its cool down the stretch as Coach Bob Huggins and star player Melvin Levett both were whistled for technical fouls.

Levett had 19 points for the Bearcats, which hadn’t lost three in a row since 1995.

No. 18 Syracuse 75, Pittsburgh 67--The Orangemen had another strong road game behind Ryan Blackwell’s 19 points.

Jason Hart had 18 points, Damone Brown scored 16 and Etan Thomas had 12 as Syracuse (17-8, 8-7) improved to 6-2 in Big East road games.

Pittsburgh (11-14, 2-12) welcomed back leading scorer Vonteego Cummings from a three-game layoff because of a back injury.

Marques Maybin scored 17 points and had seven rebounds as Louisville (14-7) defeated Georgia Tech (14-11), 78-58, at Louisville. . . .Donald Hand scored a career-high 41 points, including seven of Virginia’s 11 points in overtime, as the Cavaliers (14-12, 4-9) beat North Carolina State (15-10, 6-7), 82-79, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Charlottesville, Va. . . . Terrell McIntyre tied a career high with 29 points to lead Clemson (14-11, 3-9) to a 78-45 victory over Florida State (12-12, 5-7) in an ACC game at Clemson, S.C. . . . James Posey scored 21 points and blocked two shots in the final 30 seconds to help Xavier (18-7, 10-2) to a 62-60 Atlantic 10 victory over Temple (16-8, 10-2) at Cincinnati.

Chamique Holdsclaw scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and supplanted Allan Houston as No. 1 Tennessee’s career scoring leader for men or women in a 71-63 victory over No. 17 Auburn (18-6, 8-5) in a Southeastern Conference game at Auburn, Ala. Tennessee is 23-1 and 12-0. . . . Camile Cooper scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds as No. 2 Purdue (23-1, 14-0 in the Big Ten) beat turnover-plagued Ohio State, 88-58, at West Lafayette, Ind. Ohio State is 15-9 and 8-6. . . . Amanda Wilson scored 20 points to lead No. 3 Louisiana Tech (20-2, 8-0) over Arkansas State, 79-63, in a Sun Belt game at Jonesboro, Ark.
