Owens Has Another Big Game for Fullerton
In a repeat performance of Saturday’s game, Ryan Owens again provided the Titans with major offensive output as he hit two home runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam, to help Cal State Fullerton to a 13-2 victory over Nevada Las Vegas in nonconference baseball Sunday in Las Vegas.
Owens was three for five with five RBIs. Owens, who knocked in seven runs Saturday against UNLV, also scored three runs Sunday.
Chris Beck was four for five with two doubles and three RBIs for the Titans, who finished with 14 hits.
Titan starter Matt Sorensen (2-0) pitched eight innings to get the victory. He had five strikeouts and gave up 10 hits. Cal State Fullerton, which has won seven in a row, improves to 8-3. Las Vegas drops to 3-9.
In another nonconference game:
Long Beach State 9, USC 8--Bryan Kennedy’s bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth inning was the deciding blow for the 49ers.
Long Beach State broke a 5-5 tie in the eighth by scoring four runs, and then withstood a USC comeback which resulted in three runs in the ninth.
Darren Merrill (2-1) got the victory for the 49ers. Shaun Kramer (0-1) was the loser.
There were 2,668 in attendance at Blair Field, the second-largest crowd to see a 49er baseball game there.
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
Pacific 66, UC Irvine 60--UC Irvine closed within two with 56 seconds left, but turned the ball over on its next possession. Pacific hit four free throws to put the game away.
Megan Stafford led UC Irvine with 18 points and six assists. Kirsten Cappel had a her third consecutive double-double, scoring 17 points and getting 12 rebounds for UC Irvine (10-14, 6-7).
