Ground Is Broken for Freeway Link
Local and state officials broke ground Monday on the $1.1-billion California 30 Freeway, a 28-mile stretch that will link Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
The freeway, due for completion in 2002, is expected to lighten the commuter load now carried by Interstate 10 and other local routes.
The freeway will connect the Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210), which ends in San Dimas, with Interstate 215 in San Bernardino County, officials said.
“A lot of people have been complaining that [Interstate] 10 is bogged down and congested,” said Caltrans spokesman Rick Holland. “This should relieve a lot of congestion off the 10 and also Foothill Boulevard.”
About 43,000 vehicles a day are expected to use the new freeway, according to Caltrans.
The freeway should also lessen traffic on the existing California 30, which begins where the Foothill Freeway ends.
Holland said California 30 will help accommodate the increasing number of commuters expected to travel between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
