Call for Rabies Shots Follows Bat Capture

After finding a rabid bat in Oxnard, county health officials are making a plea to the public to update vaccinations for dogs and cats and make sure children have not come into contact with a bat.
A bat was spotted on Rialto Street between Sea Air Park and the Performing Arts Center last week. The bat, which was removed by animal-control officials, died shortly thereafter.
“If a child or an adult is bitten or has been in contact with a bat, he or she should see a physician immediately for evaluation and possible treatment,” said Robert Levin, the Ventura County health officer.
If a dog or cat is not vaccinated and has contact with a rabid bat, they must either be quarantined for six months or euthanized immediately.
If you believe that you have been exposed to rabies, wash the wound, bite or contaminated scratch immediately with soap and water. Then contact your doctor or the health department.
To report animal bites and to help locate stray animals, call the Ventura County Animal Regulation Department at 388-4341.
