Trebil Is Back on NHL Ice

Defenseman Dan Trebil, who was recalled Friday from Cincinnati of the American Hockey League, played in his first NHL game since last season Saturday against the Boston Bruins.

Trebil formed a defense pairing with Pavel Trnka and replaced Pascal Trepanier in the lineup.

Coach Craig Hartsburg had no concerns about playing Trebil, who had two goals and 10 assists in 30 games this season for Cincinnati.

“He played excellent down there,” Hartsburg said. “We didn’t get to see him very long in training camp, only two games, then he got hurt.”

Trebil suffered a broken left cheekbone when he was struck by a stray puck during a practice in September. He was sidelined for the rest of training camp, then was assigned to the minor-league team to start the season.

It was a difficult setback for Trebil, who hoped to rebound from a disappointing 1997-98 in which he played only 21 games.

In 1996-97, he played 29 games and scored three goals and six points in helping the Ducks reach the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He also played in nine of the 11 playoff games.

“Last year was just a struggle,” Trebil said. “I came into this year just hoping to make the team, then the injury happened.”

Defenseman Jason Marshall was sidelined by an injured left hamstring for the sixth consecutive game. Hartsburg hoped Marshall would be fit to play at some point on this five-game trip. But Monday’s game against Nashville is the last stop on the trip.

Left wing Tomas Sandstrom also is on the trip, practicing as best as he can as he attempts to return from a broken left wrist. Sandstrom has been sidelined since Nov. 8. He’s not expected to play for at least two more weeks.
