Orange YMCA officials said they raised 30% more funds in 1998 than the prior year. Residents and other donors pledged $121,450 for the year, with foundations, the county and Anaheim kicking in an additional $50,000 for building projects.

YMCA directors had been concerned about plans by the California Department of Transportation to take some property at their East Palmyra Avenue building for the Costa Mesa Freeway widening. But only a small parcel was needed, and the state will give the group $200,000 for reconstruction.

Along with other donations was one from a father with a child in the YMCA Indian Guides who gave the organization a personal, but anonymous, check for $20,000, directors said.
