Fiset Coming Off the Shelf

Share

Stephane Fiset made his pitch Thursday and will be in goal tonight, ending Jamie Storr’s 10-game run as the Kings’ starting goaltender, longest of his career.

No, Fiset didn’t ask to play.

He told goalie coach Don Edwards to leave Storr on the ice, that the Kings had been winning with him and that you don’t mess with success.

Edwards didn’t listen.

“We’re not a one-man team,” he said. “We’ve got confidence in both of our guys.”

And Coach Larry Robinson listened to Edwards.

“Jamie’s played 10 in a row and he’s tired,” Robinson said. “It wasn’t a tough decision. Maybe it’s tough if you don’t have confidence in your second goalie or first goalie or whatever.”

Fiset is the first goalie, but he has had three groin injuries since September and hasn’t played since Dec. 13, when he lost to the Mighty Ducks, 3-0. Two days later, he injured his groin in practice.

Storr has played in every game since, beginning his run with a 5-4 overtime loss to the New York Islanders, after which he walked into the coaches’ dressing room and apologized.

He struggled against St. Louis, and has been 7-1 since, giving up 13 goals.

“I think maybe I’ve proved myself,” Storr said. “I can play. Ten games in a row, when I’ve gotten a chance, I’ve made the most of it.”

Defenseman Doug Bodger is still recovering from being checked from behind by Phoenix’s Dallas Drake and does not expect to play tonight. The game will be the fifth in a row that Bodger has missed, one more than Drake missed when he was suspended because of the incident.

In that game, heavyweight winger Georges Laraque, in his third NHL game, scored his first two NHL goals, 102 seconds apart in the third period. He also decked the Coyotes’ Stephen Leach with one punch. Edmonton defenseman Marty McSorley, a former King, was benched Thursday and is not expected to play tonight. McSorley is minus-5 in the plus-minus column. The Kings have won five games in a row.
