Youth Playing With Gun Shoots Himself in Head
A Santa Ana teenager accidentally shot himself in the head Monday and was listed in extremely critical condition after he, his sister and a friend played with a gun they thought was unloaded, police said.
The unidentified youth was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center shortly after the noon shooting and was placed on a life support system.
Santa Ana Police Sgt. Steve Despenas said the teenagers thought they had removed all the bullets from the semiautomatic handgun before they started playing with it.
“The victim, thinking the gun was unloaded, pulled the trigger and shot himself,” Despenas said.
