Police shot and critically wounded an 18-year-old who reportedly drew a gun during a traffic stop Monday.

Irvin Landrum of Alta Loma was driving east on Baseline Road near Forbes Avenue about 1 a.m. when an officer pulled him over for speeding, Claremont Police Chief Robert Moody said.

As the officer questioned Landrum, a backup officer arrived and stood nearby, Moody said.

When the first officer told Landrum he would have to be searched for weapons, Landrum stepped back, reached under his sweater and pulled a revolver from his waistband, Moody said.

The two officers took cover behind their squad cars and fired, hitting Landrum in the ankle, chest and neck. He was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, Moody said.
