Los Amigos Makes Key Free Throws, Beats Bolsa Grande

Alvaro Arcos made all five of his free throws in the fourth quarter and his rebound of David Ly’s missed three-pointer in the final seconds secured host Los Amigos’ 59-56 victory over Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League boys’ basketball game Monday.

Arcos finished with 15 points and Isaac Hurtado also had 15 points for the Lobos (12-5, 3-0 in league), who made nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Jon James scored 17 points for Bolsa Grande (8-9, 1-2).

In other Garden Grove League games:

No. 7 Pacifica 74, La Quinta 59--Danny Dihn scored 11 of his 22 points in the third quarter when visiting Pacifica extended its lead to 18. Dihn made six three-pointers for the Mariners (15-1, 2-0).

Chris Smith scored 22 points, including four three-pointers, for La Quinta (9-7, 1-2).

Rancho Alamitos 82, Santiago 52--Cuby Vantich had 28 points and seven assists and Willie Montgomery scored 21 points for host Rancho Alamitos (8-8, 2-0), which led, 43-20, at halftime.

Vantich made four of his five three-pointers in the first half and the Vaqueros made eight of 17 three-point attempts.

Miguel Soriano scored 17 points for Santiago (2-15, 0-3).

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Tarbut V’Torah 54, Liberty Christian 42--Noam Dashti scored 16 points, Nick Light had 14 points and 10 assists and Tanner Barl had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the host Lions (8-4).

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Bolsa Grande 43, Los Amigos 36--Debby Baeder scored six of her 10 points in the third quarter for visiting Bolsa Grande (6-11, 2-1), which outscored Los Amigos, 16-7, in that period to take control.

Terra Mucha had 10 points and 17 rebounds for the Matadors.

Monica Curiel scored 15 points for Los Amigos (4-12, 1-2), which held Bolsa Grande to two points in the first quarter.

Pacifica 72, La Quinta 34--Diana Barreras scored 14 of her 25 points in the first half when the visiting Mariners moved ahead, 37-9. Dominique Valencia added 20 points for Pacifica (7-9, 2-0).

Jessica Young scored 10 points for La Quinta (2-13, 0-3).

Santiago 55, Rancho Alamitos 52--Sega Asiata scored 22 points for the visiting Cavaliers, who made seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory. Santiago (11-3, 3-0) made 15 of 18 free throws.

Katrice Pickering had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Rancho Alamitos (1-12, 0-2).

In Garden Grove League boys’ soccer:

Los Amigos 1, Bolsa Grande 0--Johnny Rocha scored with eight minutes remaining off an assist from Ivan Jaimes for the host Lobos (7-3-2, 2-0-1) and goalkeeper Frank Guillen preserved the victory with his fifth shutout.

Pacifica 2, La Quinta 1--Leroy Peuchot and Ho Tang scored goals and Joey Kalano and Derek Crocker had assists for the visiting Mariners (7-7, 2-0).

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

Los Amigos 2, Bolsa Grande 1--Lupe Ayala and Galve Lopez scored first-half goals for visiting Los Amigos (3-6, 2-1).

Pacifica 10, La Quinta 1--Tami Fipps had two goals and two assists and Alicia Schlensker and Michele Burcham each scored two goals for host Pacifica (12-1-4, 2-0).

Santiago 1, Rancho Alamitos 0--Glenny de la Cruz scored the goal for host Santiago.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Long Beach Wilson 9, Capistrano Valley 8--The Cougars (9-5) led, 7-6, through three quarters before the Bruins (10-2) rallied at Belmont Plaza. Capistrano Valley’s Sam Shepard scored with 1 minute 9 seconds remaining to make it, 9-8, but the Cougars missed a shot on their final possession.

Amber Stachowski scored three goals and her sister Ashley had two for Capistrano Valley.
