Man Breaks Leg Lugeing on Car Commercial Set

A 35-year-old man suffered a broken leg Wednesday after losing control of a wheeled street sled and smashing into a guardrail on the mountain-road set of a car commercial.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called shortly before 4:30 p.m. to Joughin Ranch on Browns Canyon Road, about four miles north of the Ronald Reagan Freeway, according to spokesman Jim Wells.

An executive for the Entertainment Industry Development Corp., the public-private agency that coordinates local film permits, said the mishap occurred on the set of an Oldsmobile commercial being shot by Orbit Productions Inc.

The accident apparently took place as the man, a member of the crew, was sliding down the road to his car in a street luge--a wheeled sled--after filming had completed, said Michael Bobenko, senior vice president of operations for EIDC.

“He was not part of a stunt team,” said Bobenko. “He is a regular on the street-luge circuit.”

The unidentified victim was treated by an on-site medic and taken by helicopter to Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, where he was listed in fair condition Wednesday night, according to a hospital spokesman.

Cal/OSHA is charged with investigating workplace injuries on movie sets. No one from the agency could be reached for comment Wednesday.
