Editor, Two Writers Join Fashion Staff

Nancy Yoshihara has been named fashion editor of the Southern California Living section of The Times.

In addition, Valli Herman, senior fashion writer at the Dallas Morning News, joins The Times as senior fashion writer, and Michael Quintanilla, a staff writer for Southern California Living, becomes a fashion writer.

Yoshihara, who has covered retail, finance and consumer affairs, most recently was a Times editorial writer. She will direct the fashion/style and beauty coverage, which appears in Friday’s Southern California Living section.

Yoshihara joined The Times in 1973 and had been an editorial writer since 1990. Before joining the editorial board, Yoshihara was a staff writer in the business section. She covered retailing, marketing and Asian businesses in the United States.

She is a native of Los Angeles and has a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s in journalism from UCLA.

Herman has been senior fashion writer at Fashion!Dallas, the fashion section of the Dallas Morning News since 1992.

She is a former fashion writer for the Los Angeles Daily News and was a features and business reporter at the Post Tribune in Gary, Ind. She is three-time winner of fashion journalism’s coveted Atrium Award in 1997, 1996 and 1994 for fashion feature writing.

Herman, a native of central Illinois, has a bachelor’s degree in advertising and a master’s in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Quintanilla has been a features writer at The Times since 1989. He was a staff writer at the Dallas Morning News and the Dallas Times Herald. He also was a reporter/assistant features editor at the El Paso Herald-Post and a reporter at the San Antonio Express-News.

Quintanilla was named feature writer of the year in 1992 by the California Newspaper Publishers Assn. Other first-place honors: the National Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi (public service); Associated Press Managing Editors. He is also winner of an Atrium Award.

Quintanilla, a native of San Antonio, has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Trinity University.
