Program Offers Free Eye Exams

Share

California families without eye-care coverage can get free eye exams and prescription glasses for $20 during the month of March through a special program being sponsored by the California Optometric Assn.

The Vision USA / California Vision Project uses ZIP codes to match eligible applicants with the nearest participating optometrist. Under the program, patients undergo a comprehensive exam and receive a diagnosis of vision or medical problems affecting their eyes. If needed, they receive a prescription for low-cost eyeglasses and referrals for additional care.

Applicants must be employed or be part of a household with one working member and meet low-income criteria. They also must not have insurance that covers eye exams and or have had an eye exam within the past 24 months.

Those who qualify will receive a letter with the name, address and phone number of an optometrist. They must make an appointment for an examination within a week of receiving the letter and must be seen by April 15.

Applications can be made by telephone by calling 800) 766-4466 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Jan. 29.

Vision USA is a nonprofit charity developed by members of the American Optometric Assn. to provide basic eye services to those who have no means of obtaining care. Throughout March, optometrists nationwide will offer their services free through the annual program, designed to coincide with Save Your Vision Week, celebrated during the first week of March.

The program is made possible through a grant from Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Products. The California Optical Laboratory Assn. has contributed to the program for 10 years.
