Cougars Overdose on Jacobsen

You could say that in the end, Glendora had too much Casey Jacobsen for Capistrano Valley, but that wouldn’t be entirely correct.

There was too much Jacobsen in the beginning and in the middle as well.

The 6-foot-6 All-American who has signed with Stanford, scored a Dream Classic tournament-record 43 points in leading Glendora to a 66-48 victory over Capistrano Valley Monday at Pauley Pavilion.

Jacobsen did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 32 points as the Tartans (18-1) took a 43-32 lead at the break. He scored Glendora’s first 16 points, making six of his first eight shots. He finished the game 16 of 26 from the field, including four three-pointers. He broke a record of 37 points set by Erron Maxey of Lake Elsinore High in 1995.

“They call it ‘the zone,’ ” Jacobsen said. “I was in it for the first half. You never know when it’s going to come but when it does, you take advantage.”

Jacobsen, the Southern Section Division I player of the year last year, put on a performance that had players from Capistrano Valley (16-4) amazed.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Cougar guard Nathan Hair said. “I thought he’d cool off but he didn’t.”

The Cougars switched defenses on Jacobsen in the second half, double-teaming him in a man-to-man, and held him to 11 points.

“We just started running people at him and tried to keep the ball out of his hands,” Coach Brian Mulligan said. “Something we should have gone to a lot sooner. The same guy killing you for a whole half shouldn’t happen.”

J.J. Sola had 19 points to pace the Cougars, including an inside layup that gave Capistrano Valley a 13-12 lead with 3:09 left in the first quarter. It was the Cougars’ last lead. Glendora went on a 9-2 run to end the first quarter.
