Seventh-Ranked Fountain Valley Takes a Fall Against Esperanza

Heavyweight George Mares won the dual meet, recording a near fall to give Esperanza a 34-29 victory over Fountain Valley in Sunset League wrestling Thursday night.

Esperanza’s Roland Gutierrez, wrestling at 191 pounds, helped set up Mares with a pin in 36 seconds. Fountain Valley came into the meet ranked seventh in the county and third in CIF Division III.

In the Empire League:

Loara 58, Century 10--Sophomore Orlando Galvan, ranked in the county’s top five at 103 pounds, moved up a weight class and pinned his Century opponent in 3:22 to improve his record to 27-4.

Gabe Ponce earned a pin in 2:30 at 130 pounds and Luis Aparicio, who’s ranked third in the county, had a pin in 1:34 at 135 pounds for Loara (5-0, 3-0). Heavyweight Jose Hernandez had a pin in 29 seconds for the Saxons.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 62, Pacifica 15--Freshman David Meade started the match off with a pin, and Manny Alvarado had an impressive victory over Josh Key to help the Vaqueros (7-8, 3-1) remain in second place in the Garden Grove League.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 36, Aliso Niguel 36-- Costa Mesa (1-5-1, 0-2-1) was down by six points before the heavyweight match. Mustang sophomore Anthony Grubisich’s pin earned him six points and secured the tie.

Earlier in match, Costa Mesa had one team point deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 59, Woodbridge 22--Andy Twentyman, ranked first in the county at 152 pounds, Josh Jarrett (160) and Danny Bortolussi (171) all had pins for El Toro (6-2, 2-1). Woodbridge’s Robert Valenzuela defeated Brian Wood, 12-3, to improve his record to 30-0.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 45, Capistrano Valley 25--T.J. Henderson earned a pin at 145 pounds to give Capistrano Valley a seven-point lead, but Vincent Giordano (152 pounds) earned a pin in 3:00 and Ashton Chevalier won by forfeit to regain the lead for San Clemente (18-3, 3-1).

Andy Harrison (171 pounds) and James Allen (189 pounds) earned pins to seal the victory for the Tritons. San Clemente’s David Luciani (135 pounds) got a takedown in overtime to defeat Brian Peterson, 8-6.
