Ventura resident Alfredo Alarcon Macias died Thursday at the home of one of his sons following a brief illness. At the time of his death, Macias was surrounded by several family members. He was 84.

Macias was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Metcalf, Ariz. He served in the Conservation Corps and worked in the copper mines in Arizona during World War II.

After moving to Ventura in 1945, Macias joined Laborers Union Local No. 585 and was employed at a now-closed Ventura gravel-mining company, where he worked for 19 years.

In 1962, Macias and his wife opened Macias Drive-In on Ventura Avenue. The restaurant was well-known in the community, Macias’ family said.

The couple retired from the business in the 1970s and passed it on to a son. The restaurant has since closed.

In his retirement, Macias enjoyed going to Las Vegas.

“He was a lot of fun and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was very down to earth and was absolutely devoted to his family and friends,” said his daughter-in-law, Julie Macias of Ventura.

Macias was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Conception, who died in 1997, and a daughter, Guadalupe Lopez, who died in 1993.

Macias is survived by two daughters, Virginia Lopez and Connie Hanks, both of Camarillo; four sons, Frank Macias of North Carolina, Alfred Macias Jr. of San Diego, Robert Macias of Ventura and David Macias of Palmdale; two brothers, Salvador Macias of Los Angeles and Dr. David Macias of Guadalajara, Mexico; 29 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura, with a rosary at 7 p.m. The service will be at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura, with interment following at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
