Arroyo Begins Career in Grand Fashion, 10-6

Tim Arroyo’s first hit for Cal State Northridge was a grand one.

Arroyo, a freshman from Kennedy High, was batting for Daryl Grant with the bases loaded in the 11th inning Saturday when he drove the first pitch from Taggert Bozied into a tree behind the left-field fence to give the Matadors (2-0) a 10-6 nonconference baseball victory over San Francisco at Northridge.

Senior pitcher Jim DeBiase (1-0) was most relieved by Arroyo’s blast after allowing the Dons (0-2) to score four runs in the ninth inning on a two-run double by Ryan Evangello and a two-run home run by Jason Howard--although reliever Trevor Gray was charged with two of the runs.

DeBiase settled down after San Francisco tied the game, ending the inning with two of his five strikeouts. He held the Dons hitless for the rest of his three-inning outing.

Bozied (0-1) loaded the bases for Arroyo on a double by Adrian Mendoza, a passed ball, and intentional walks to Kevin Patrick and Dan Phillips.
