A 29-year-old Los Angeles man and his 13-month-old son were in critical condition Sunday after a car struck them Saturday night as they crossed a busy Anaheim intersection, police said.

Alfonso Ramirez and his son, Alfonso Jr., were taken by helicopter to UCI Medical Center with critical head and leg injuries following the 7 p.m. accident.

Alfred Sanchez Quintanilla, 76, of South El Monte, was traveling north on Knott Avenue at about 35 mph when he struck Ramirez, who was carrying his son in his arms, at the intersection of Knott Avenue and Ariel Place, Anaheim Police Lt. Craig Hunter said. The impact flung Ramirez’s baby from his arms, Hunter said.

Quintanilla, who was not injured or issued a citation, told police at the scene he could not stop his car in time, Hunter said. The accident is under investigation.
