Rolling Car Kills Its Owner, 80
An 80-year-old Laguna Hills man died Tuesday after being crushed by his runaway car, police said.
“It’s real strange,” Mark Reeves, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol, said of the accident, which happened about 4:30 p.m. at Leisure World.
Reeves said the man parked his 1984 Audi on a hill on San Amadeo near Avenida Sosiega in Leisure World and got out to help a passenger onto the sidewalk.
Apparently, Reeves said, the man forgot to set the hand brake. When the car started rolling backward, he said, the man stepped behind the vehicle to try to stop it, lost his balance, fell and was crushed beneath the wheels.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Reeves said. Authorities did not release the victim’s name pending notification of kin.
