Zodiac Falls in Shootout

Jose Vasquez’s goal in the 89th minute gave the Zodiac a temporary reprieve Thursday night, before it fell in a shootout, 2-1, to the Vancouver 86ers in an A-League soccer game at Santa Ana Stadium.

Vancouver (7-6) broke a scoreless tie in the 84th minute on a goal by Eduardo Sebrangi. Vasquez tied the score with a minute remaining off an assist from Gustavo Leal.

After a scoreless overtime, Vancouver took a 2-0 lead in the shootout on goals by Chris Franks and Alfredo Valente.

The Zodiac (8-7) missed on its first three shots before Steve Patterson scored to cut the margin to 2-1. But Nico Berg scored on Vancouver’s final kick to clinch the victory.

Goalkeeper Mike Littman had nine saves for the Zodiac and Paul Shepard had 10 for Vancouver.

The Zodiac will host Puma UNAM of the Mexican First Division in an exhibition at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
