In its continuing effort to brighten Main Street’s image, the City Council’s Downtown Committee has decided to spruce up the street lights. Tests by city consultant Tom Brohard show that Pier Plaza is twice as bright as Main Street, where the globes encasing the lightbulbs are old and yellow, he said. City staff members plan to replace 16 globes, which will cost $4,300. If that doesn’t do the trick, then the city may consider spending “big money”--more than $25,000--to completely change the light fixtures, said Daryl Smith, superintendent of the city’s park, tree and landscape division.
