Man Surrenders After 2-Hour Police Standoff
WATTS — A man who barricaded himself and threatened to blow up his home Wednesday was taken into custody after a two-hour standoff, police said.
Geronimo Amaya, 23, surrendered to Special Weapons and Tactics team officers about 2 p.m. in the 9700 block of Evers Avenue, said Los Angeles police spokesman Guillermo Campos.
The standoff began when LAPD officers and a parole agent went to Amaya’s Watts home to serve an arrest warrant about 11:15 a.m., Campos said. He was suspected of committing an assault with a deadly weapon in Monterey Park.
But when Amaya saw the police officers “he barricaded himself and threatened to blow up the location if officers attempted to enter,” Campos said.
The special weapons team was sent to the scene, Campos said. A crisis negotiator contacted Amaya by phone and talked him into surrendering without further incident.
