Firefighters Gaining Control of Brush Fire
Firefighters encircled a brush fire Wednesday night that had scorched 2,576 acres of desert and mountain brush east of the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County, and expected to have it fully extinguished by tonight, authorities said.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation, said Bill Peters, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry.
The fire, which began Tuesday afternoon, destroyed a travel trailer, several automobiles and assorted utility buildings, but no homes were destroyed, Peters said. A freight train that was parked in the middle of the fire zone was not damaged.
About 700 firefighters were putting out hot spots Wednesday, and water-dropping helicopters flew overhead looking for the last of the flames, Peters said.
