O.C. Buddhist Church Will Celebrate Obon
Beginning Sunday, the Orange County Buddhist Church will celebrate the traditional holiday of Obon with English and Japanese services, Odori dancing and a bazaar and carnival.
The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday with an English language service. The Japanese service will be at 1:30 p.m.
The traditional Obon dance, which expresses joy for Buddhist teachings, will be performed from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 17 and 18. The movements depict the livelihood of the villagers such as fishermen, coal miners and farmers. The bazaar and carnival, featuring games and food, will be from 2 to 9 p.m. July 17 and 2 to 8:30 p.m. July 18.
Obon evolved from the religious custom of honoring the deceased with memorial services. During the carnival, the Hondo, or temple sanctuary, will be open to interested visitors. Hosts will also be available to guide visitors through the Hondo, as well as answer any questions regarding Buddhism and its historical background.
All events are free. Parking is available across the street from the temple. The church is at 909 S. Dale St., just north of Ball Road in west Anaheim. Information: (714) 827-9590.
