12 Inmates Hurt in Brawl at Jail
Twelve inmates suffered minor injuries in a fight Saturday between African American and Latino inmates at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center’s south facility, authorities said.
“It was black versus Hispanic, and they fought for about one to two minutes,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Joan Raber.
Deputies brought the situation under control with verbal commands and pepper spray, she said. About 50 inmates were involved in the disturbance.
“The inmates had no weapons,” Raber said. “They fought with their fists and feet only.”
Saturday’s incident was the second race-related fight at the facility in two months. In May, 150 African American and Latino inmates were involved in a brawl that resulted in injuries to 15 people.
