GARDEN GROVE
A fire destroyed a two-bedroom apartment in the Haster Gardens complex Monday night and sent one woman to the hospital with smoke-related injuries, officials said. Maria Gurrola, 39, suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center, where she was treated and released early Tuesday. She was in the apartment with her family when the fire occurred. The blaze caused $29,000 in property and structural damage, authorities said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, said acting Battalion Chief David Berlag.
Earlier this year, more than half the tenants in the complex were embroiled in a dispute with the property manager and initiated a two-month rent strike to protest what they called deplorable living conditions. In April, an Orange County judge appointed a new receiver for the property and the rent strike ended.
