Brush Fire Near Lake Piru Burns 1,500 Acres by Evening

A brush fire broke out Saturday afternoon in dry, rugged hills near Lake Piru in northeastern Ventura County, consuming about 1,500 acres and still burning out of control into the evening, fire officials said.

There were no reports of injuries, and the fire appeared to be heading east toward the Los Angeles County line and away from populated areas.

The blaze had not been contained, but prospects were “looking better” by evening, said Sandi Wells, a spokeswoman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

There was no estimate of when the fire might be extinguished.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call received at 2:42 p.m., Wells said. Officials were not certain where the fire began, although it was somewhere along Holser Canyon Road.

About 350 firefighters, mostly from Ventura County, Los Angeles County and the California Department of Forestry, went to the scene. Neither the Los Padres nor Angeles national forests were affected.

“It’s putting on quite a show for both counties,” Wells said.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, but a federal fire investigator was called to the scene Saturday night.
