History Instructor Honored

The students and faculty at Glendale Community College recently honored Peggy Renner, a longtime history professor, with the school’s 13th annual Distinguished Faculty Award.

Renner, who joined the college staff in 1989, is chairwoman of the history department and coordinates Women’s History Month events.

She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and served as a delegate to the fourth United Nations Women’s Conference in Beijing in 1996. She was named a Woman of Distinction by the Verdugo Hills Business and Professional Women.

“Dr. Renner is open, friendly and accessible,” said college spokeswoman Wendy Grove. “Her dedication to her students, her involvement in the community, particularly with women’s issues, and the hours she pours into activities that benefit the campus make her a deserving recipient.”

KUDOS

Natural Leader: Adria Metson, a fifth-grade teacher at Welby Way Elementary School in Canoga Park, has received the Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce’s Reward Outstanding Leaders in Education, or ROLE, award. The Tarzana resident, a 19-year teaching veteran, was recognized for her innovative teaching programs and community involvement. Metson’s students created a handmade quilt, the squares of which illustrated important events in U.S. history.

Scholarship Winner: Reseda Community Adult School graduate Eugenia Perez has received a $250 California Council of Adult Education scholarship and a Council of Mexican-American Administrators award of $500. The 30-year-old El Salvador native, who immigrated to the United States about 10 years ago to improve her work prospects, plans to pursue a career as a pharmacy technician.

PROGRAM NOTES

Never Too Late: Glendale senior citizens interested in psychology, literature, art, theater and the Internet are taking free courses this summer offered by Glendale Community College. Summer Concert: After a month of hard work and practice, the Kadima Conservatory of Music’s summer seminar students, ages 6 to 14, will perform a chamber concert Thursday at the conservatory’s Chandler Annex in Sherman Oaks at 6 p.m. John Williams’ “Star Wars” theme and Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” are among several pieces the young musicians will perform. A second concert will be held Aug. 5 at Valley College’s Recital Hall in the Music Building at 6 p.m. For information, call (818) 780-9596.

APPOINTMENT

The Las Virgenes Unified School District has named Adelle Perez assistant principal of Calabasas High School for the 1999-2000 school year. The longtime educator, who has taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District, most recently served as assistant principal at a Northern California school.
