Cook and Emery Win in 3 Sets at U.S. Clay Courts

Tenth-seeded Lester Cook of Calabasas and Matt Emery of Lexington, Ky., advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles at the boys’ 16 U.S. National Clay Court Championships with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jon Reckewev of Lincoln, Neb., and Lance Vodicka of Florissant, Mo., on Tuesday at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas and Sam Warburg of Sacramento defeated Matthew Cabana of Plantation, Fla., and Eric Hechtman of Miami, Fla., 6-4, 6-2.

Amritraj and Warburg, who won the Easter Bowl national doubles title in April, upset second-seeded Roger Gubser of Laredo, Texas, and Brent D’Amico of Aurora, Colo. in the round of 64.

If Cook and Emery and Amritraj and Warburg win their matches today, they will meet in the quarterfinals Thursday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

David Loewenthal of Franklin Lakes, N.J., beat Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo, 7-5, 6-3, in in boys’ 18 singles at U.S. National Clay Court Championships at the Louisville Country Club in Louisville, Ky.

Rettenmaier and Robby Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Yoku Kiuchi of Princeton Junction, N.J., and Eric Simonton of Annandale, N.J.

Third-seeded Nina Yaftali of Westlake Village defeated Elizabeth Conyer of Paducah, Ky., 6-1, 6-1, in the girls’ 14 singles in the U.S. National Clay Court Championships at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, Fla.

Fifth-seeded Erica Sauer of Somis beat Ashley Jakupcin of Dublin, Ohio, 6-2, 6-0, and unseeded Erin Everly of Calabasas won, 6-0, 6-3, over Julie Martin of Tulsa, Okla.

* Marissa Irvin of Stanford, a graduate of Harvard-Westlake, has been chosen to the Rolex Collegiate All-Star team.

Irvin, a sophomore, won the Pacific-10 singles title and was NCAA Division I runner-up last season.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Josh Levy, who won the boys’ high jump for Campbell Hall High in the Southern Section Division IV championships in May, will walk on at UCLA.

Levy has a career best of 6-7.

BASEBALL

* Pitcher Adam Springston of Cal Lutheran signed a free-agent contract with the Dodgers on July 13 after participating in a tryout camp.

Springston reported to the Dodgers’ rookie league team in Great Falls, Mont., July 14 and made his first professional appearance Sunday, pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief in a 10-inning game to earn his first victory.

GOLF

* The seventh annual Wellness Community celebrity tournament will be played Aug. 2 at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

Henry Bibby, men’s basketball coach at USC, and actors Chad Everett and Lyle Waggoner are expected to play.

Proceeds benefit the Wellness Community, a nonprofit group that assists cancer patients and their families.

* The Super Eagle baseball camp for boys and girls 7-15 will be held Monday through July 30 at Chaminade High. Cost is $150.

Cost is $35 per day or $90 for all three days. Instruction will be provided by Coach Paul Keysaw of Moorpark, and Steve Neal and Rich Bailey, two-time NCAA Division I champions at Cal State Bakersfield.

MARTIAL ARTS

Brittany Acebal, 8, led a strong showing by the Chul Jin Martial Arts Academy in Sunland, winning the red belt sparring division and finishing third in forms at the U.S. Taekwondo Junior Olympics in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Crystal Lara, 13, won the black belt forms division, Cynthia Lara, 8, was third in red belt forms and third in sparring, Alex Lee, 9, finished second in blue belt sparring and Cody Ballardo, 8, was second in red belt sparring.
