IN THE CUP

Ron Won of Irvine, Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda and Angela Rho of Fullerton have been named by the AJGA to represent the West in the Canon Cup Aug. 9-12 at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The Canon Cup, one of the premier events in junior golf, pits the top 10 boys and the top 10 girls from the West against their counterparts from the East. A Ryder Cup format is used with four-ball matches, foursome matches and singles matches played over three days.

Won is ranked No. 7 among boys and Bollini is No. 23. Rho is ranked No. 8 among girls.

Candie Kung of Fountain Valley, ranked No. 1, was invited to play, but declined because she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur which will be held the same week. Rho also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur, but has not yet decided which event she will play.

TAPIE ON TOP

Alan Tapie of Laguna Niguel moved into first place on the European Seniors Tour money list with his first victory on the tour in the Elf Seniors Open July 10 at Golf de Chantaco in France.

Tapie, a former instructor at Saddleback Driving Range, shot 64-66-70 for a 10-under-par 200 to win the Elf by three strokes over John McTear of Scotland and Liam Higgins of Ireland.

Tapie, 50, is playing his first season on the European Seniors Tour. He has earned 65,694 Euros (about $63,818). Ray Carrasco of Irvine, also in his first year on the European Seniors Tour, is seventh on the money list with 32,616 Euros.

LOCAL QUALIFIES ABROAD

Jim Petralia, a teaching professional at Oak Creek in Irvine, shot three-over-par 76 Tuesday at Castlerock Golf Course in Northern Ireland to qualify for the Senior British Open.

Brian Huggett of Wales is the defending champion of the Senior British Open, which will be played July 22-25 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

FOLL-OH THE LEADER

Defending U.S. Junior Amateur champion James Oh of Lakewood and Jason Hartwick of Sacramento shot three-under-par 69s Tuesday to take a one-stroke lead in the Boys’ Division of the AJGA Junior Championship at Coto de Caza.

Erica Blasberg of Corona shot 74 to take the Girls’ Division lead.

Steve Conway of Dove Canyon, Brian Sinay of Irvine and Won are among a group of seven players who are three shots off the boys’ lead.

Courtney Goebel of Huntington Beach, the only county girl entered, shot 84 and is tied for 11th.

The 54-hole tournament continues through Thursday.

* In the first day of the Junior World Championships in San Diego, Rho shot 70 and is in second, trailing by a stroke, in the girls’ 15-17 division. In the girls’ 11-12 division, Jennifer Osborn of Huntington Beach shot 58 and is tied for for fourth, three shots off the pace.
