If a fellow concertgoer at OZZFest ’99 asks for help driving a stake, don’t get the wrong idea. He or she is probably just pitching a tent at Camp Ozzy, a new annex at the annual hard-rock blowout. The campground opens Friday, and Saturday’s concert features the final U.S. performance of Black Sabbath, as well as assaults from Rob Zombie, Deftones, Slayer, Primus, Godsmack and System of a Down, plus nine bands on the second stage.

Besides pineapple, does Hawaii have a more popular export than Don Ho? Since making a splash at the famed Duke’s in Waikiki in the 1960s, Ho has toured the mainland over and over--including two sold-out tours last year. Ho says he’ll never retire--and it’s a good thing. A whole new generation has turned on to his tunes with the popularity of lounge and exotica music. “Tiny Bubbles,” anyone?

8 pm: Dance

Members of the adventuresome UCLA APPEX (Asian Pacific Performance Exchange) group gather in downtown L.A. to perform traditional Burmese drumming, Thai classical dance, Tibetan song and dance, Vietnamese modern dance, a Filipino-Indonesian dance collaboration and a pan-APPEX music ensemble. Launched in 1995, APPEX invites Asian and American artists and writers to work together on interdisciplinary and cross-cultural projects at UCLA. Public performances have been rare, so if you miss this one-night foray into outreach, there’s only a program featuring a different slate of artists on July 29 in the UCLA Dance Building to give you a glimpse of APPEX at its apex.
