Andreas Clavadetscher of Liechtenstein was leading the Race Across America bicycle competition on the second day Friday. Kaname Sakurai of Japan was second.
The race began in Irvine at noon Thursday and Clavadetscher reached Checkpoint 12 near Garando, Ariz., 628 miles into the race, at 9:10 p.m. PDT Friday.
Kristin Marquis of the Crown Valley Divers in Laguna Niguel finished first and teammate Michelle Brown was fourth in the girls’ 16-18 one-meter springboard competition Friday at the U.S. Diving Zone E Junior Championships in Beaverton, Ore.
The top six divers in the 16-18 divisions and the top five in the 13-and-under and 14-15 divisions qualify for the Junior National Diving Championships in Orlando Aug. 2-9.
Other qualifiers included Ray Vincent of Mission Viejo Nadadores, who finished second in the boys’ 16-18 three-meter springboard competition.
Rookies Dario Brose and Richard Mulrooney scored second-half goals to rally San Jose from a two-goal deficit before the Clash defeated the Chicago Fire, 3-2, in a Major League Soccer shootout before 8,329 in Chicago.
