TODAY-THURSDAY VS. CINCINNATI

Share

Schedule: 7 tonight, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, 1 p.m. Thursday.

* Television: Fox Sports West 2 all three games.

* Radio: XTRA (1150), KWKW (1330).

* Pitching matchups: Chan Ho Park (6-8, 6.16 ERA) vs. Brett Tomko (3-5, 4.93) tonight; Robinson Checo (0-0, 17.18) vs. Steve Avery (6-7, 5.16) Wednesday; Darren Dreifort (8-8, 5.68) vs. Pete Harnisch (9-6, 3.71) Thursday.

* Last series: Los Angeles won two of the three games when the teams met in late May, with Park and Ismael Valdes getting the victories. It was during that series the Dodgers fired pitching coach Charlie Hough and replaced him with Claude Osteen.

* About the Reds: Cincinnati, second in the NL Central, continues to be one of this season’s biggest surprises. They have stayed right on the heels of first-place Houston and are battling for the wild card. First baseman Sean Casey is vying to be the first Reds’ NL batting champion since Pete Rose in 1973. Although Avery is scheduled to start Wednesday, his place in the rotation remains shaky with left-hander Denny Neagle set to return from the disabled list on Aug. 4. Avery is also experiencing arm problems and could visit Dodger team physician Dr. Frank Jobe. Neagle’s return might also keep the Reds from making any deals before Saturday’s trading deadline, although GM Jim Bowden is reportedly interested in the Angels’ Omar Olivares.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY VS. ARIZONA

* Schedule: 7 p.m. Friday; 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

* Television: Channel 5 Friday; Fox Sports West 2 Sunday.

* Radio: XTRA (1150), KWKW (1330).

* Last series: Eric Karros’ 200th career home run Sunday gave Kevin Brown the edge over Randy Johnson in the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory, which ended the Dodgers’ five-game losing streak. Even if it was not intentional, all-star third baseman Matt Williams will not soon forget taking a Brown fastball in his rib cage. He will probably face Brown on Friday. The season series is tied, 5-5.

* About the Diamondbacks: Catcher Kelley Stinnett had four hits in 23 at-bats last week but two of those hits were home runs.

HISTORY LESSON

A look back at this week in Angel history:

July 28, 1991: Montreal’s Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game against the Dodgers, the only complete-game no-hitter by an opposing pitcher at Dodger Stadium.

July 31, 1997: Chan Ho Park retired 19 consecutive Cubs from the second to the eighth inning in a 4-1 victory. It was his 10th win of the season and he finished the year 14-8.

Aug. 2, 1989: Tommy Lasorda manages his 2,000th game, a 7-4 victory over the Giants. Lasorda retired in 1996 as manager for health reasons after 20 seasons.
