State Senate OKs $290,000 for Expansion of YMCA

The state Senate has agreed to add $290,000 to the governor’s 1999-2000 budget for the Verdugo Hills Family YMCA, said state Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank).

The money will be earmarked to buy land next to the Verdugo Hills YMCA for an expanded youth center to serve up to 150 youngsters at a time.

“We’ve seen that when we don’t provide productive activities for our youth to do after school, they get into crime,” Schiff said last week. “This project will provide families and children some educational activities in an area that strongly needs these services.”

The Verdugo Hills YMCA serves Sunland, Tujunga, Sun Valley, Sylmar, Arleta and Lake View Terrace.

Schiff, who is a member of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education, said the budget item will move on to the two-house Conference Committee for further discussion.
